Sagittarius Done!

Now that I finished up the Split Nine Patch, I was able to work on the Zodiac Stars again last night. I managed to finish up Sagittarius....

I can be such a perfectionist!  That one side doesn't quite match up so I'm seriously considering ripping it out and doing it again.  But overall, i really love it, so for now, it can stay.  Hopefully tonight I can do the three little starlets out of these blues and then move on to the next block.

Also, I finished up my sample blocks for my new leader/ender project, Patches and Pinwheels.  Read more about it here.

Each block measures 6-1/2".  I seriously love these little blocks.  The pinwheel goes together so fast compared to the 36-patch!  It makes a nice break before the next patch block.

What are y'all working on this week???  Come see everyone's projects over at Freshly Pieced.

WIP Wednesday - Split Nine Patch

I've had so much going on for Cassidy this week that I've had very little sewing time.  That being said, I have manage to get the first four rows sewn together for my split nine-patch leader ender project.

I also have the next two rows pinned and at the ready next to my sewing machine so I can attack it after work.  This was Bonnie's leader/ender challenge from July of last year.  I finally got all 182 blocks done over the weekend and laid out so I could get the top together.

This quilt has it all:  Texas prints, Christmas and Halloween fabric, kid prints, script prints, just everything!  I kinda see it as a picnic quilt.  I'm really tempted to back it in a lightweight denim.  We'll see.

Jo over at Jo's Country junction has a great challenge to pull a Bonnie UFO to try to finish prior to the start of the new mystery.  This is the only Bonnie UFO I have so it's the one I'm going to work on.  Hope to have it done pretty quickly.

WIP Wednesday 10/15/14

Now that the Union Jack top is done, I have finally gotten started on my niece's graduation quilt.  Here's the first block.

It is "Libra" from a pattern I found a few years ago called Zodiac Stars.  (I've given the link but, fair warning guys, this is a foreign site.  I suggest looking at it in Google Chrome so it will be translated for you!)  As you can see, it is a paper pieced block and seriously intense!!!  During the week, I only get to sew for a few hours in the evenings.  This block took me my last two evenings to complete.  But it was so worth it!  It's gorgeous!  Even I was impressed with how well the lines matched up.  I was really worried about that.

As you can guess, there are a total of 12 of these blocks plus 32 "starlets" which are 5" mini stars.  My niece is a Doctor Who fan (as am I!) and I'm going to add a few Doctor Who blocks to this to make it more her.  Can't wait to see how it turns out!

WIP Wednesday 10/8/14

I got the last of my sewing machine blocks in the mail from Ann yesterday!!  Her's is the one on the bottom right.  Doesn't it look great with the rest of the blocks??

I'll probably get them sewn together tonight before working on the Union Jacks.

What are you working on??  Linking up with Freshly Pieced for WIP Wednesday.

WIP Wednesday 9/17/14

I'm making steady progress on the Union Jack quilt.  Here's Monday's block:

And the one from last night:

Those polka dots are a new addition.  My aunt bought me the rest of the fabric I needed to finish up this quilt plus a few extras and the polka dots were a complete surprise!  But they fit in perfectly.  Almost done cutting everything (I cut enough for 3 blocks every time I make one), so starting tonight, they should start going together much more quickly.

WIP Wednesday 9/10/14

Now that the Texas quilt is done (insert happy dance here), I've been able to move back to my Union Jack quilt.  My daughter goes to Churchill High School and, of course, the Union Jack is their school flag.  She graduates this year so it's time to get moving on her graduation quilt.

Sunday I made this one...

I'm using my stash of "Chance of Flowers," by Moda.  Aren't they fantastic colors??  Monday came this one....

The pattern is from an issue of McCall's Quilting from early this year.  And last night was this one....

Here's a shot of what I have done so far on my design wall...

She's like me and doesn't really like small quilts so I'm making this one pretty big and doubling the number of blocks from the original pattern for a total of 36 blocks.  They are paper pieced and go together pretty quickly.  The actual assembly only takes about an hour per block but the cutting takes time.  I'm getting a rhythm though so hopefully I'll get it done soon.  My niece is also a senior this year and I have another paper pieced quilt to get through (hers is much more time consuming) so I need to get a move on it!

Fabric Tuesday & WIP Wednesday!

I had so much fun today!  I've been following along with the Deep in the Heart of Texas Roadtrip Quilt Along being hosted over at My Fabric Relish.  Actually, it just started on the first, but it's been a blast so far!!  Y'all really ought to check it out.  Consider it your summer vacation through this beautiful state.

We started with the first quadrant...

As you can see, I decided to play with some of my many, many pastels.  I threw in the red as a contrast square and I love how it is playing with the pastels.  The tone just matches the darker red in the florals.

Yesterday, the Dallas block came out.  It's going right in that middle space you see above.  It is based on a fantastic Dallas attraction at the state fair, The Texas Star Ferris wheel.  I saw the pattern yesterday and couldn't wait to print out the pattern this morning and I got started on it as soon as I got home from work.

Don't you love how this...

Turns into this???

It's so pretty!!!  And that, became this....

The colors are way off on this!  (Dangers of taking pics inside I suppose)  But I love, love, love this!!  It's not too late for you to join in!!

What are y'all working on??

WIP Wednesday

This week has been all about trying to get my quilt alongs caught up or a little ahead so I'm ready for the new ones that start on the 1st.  :)  How's that for overloading myself???

Over the weekend, I caught up the Jane Austen quilt along and the last few days has been trying to get my blocks ready for the Supernova Friendship Block Swap.  I just finished up the first two blocks tonight:

I'll be honest here.  These fabrics are WAY out of my comfort zone.  I'm not too sure how I feel about the blocks to be honest.  I send one to my partner and keep the other.  My son, who was with me when I was shopping for the fabric, claimed this one.  I sent him a pic of the first block and he was thrilled.  I guess that's all that matters, right?

I'm doing this same block swap with my aunt and for that one we're doing browns and turquoise/teals with a cream background.  Closer to my style.  We'll see how those come out in the next few days.

If there is anyone else following this swap, the original directions give you cutting instructions for the color fabrics as a per block thing but the background is all cut at once.  If you're like me, and only needing to cut on a per block basis, you'll need (8) 3" squares and (8) 3 x 5-1/2" rectangles PER BLOCK.  So to do two, you'll need 16 each.

So that brings us up to date.  What are y'all working on?

WIP Wednesday and May Prepping Challenge Day 3

Hello Everyone!!  Has your week been good?  Productive?  I feel like this week has been sooooo long!  You know what I mean.  Those weeks where you wake up on Tuesday thinking it's Wednesday?  And then waking up Wednesday and thinking it's Thursday?  Yep, I'm having one of those weeks.  But I've been pushing through and have accomplished quite a bit!

First up, I finished up the medium Diamond Hearted Stars for the "Oh My Stars" quilt along.

They are so pretty.  My daughter keeps looking at this quilt and saying, "This is for me, right?"  As if she's really asking.  She's laying down her claim early.  Here it is as of Sunday evening:

My daughter says that's the best part of having a mom that quilts is that she gets first choice on anything coming off my sewing machine.  Arguing the point with her is a waste of breath.  She is convinced.

I also caught up on my Jane Austen quilt along, finishing up this week's block last night.

As far as the May prepping challenge goes, my day 3 was another success.  I had leftover fried chicken and mashed potatoes for lunch and then tonight was an easy night of fried bologna sandwiches (yes, I'm southern as if my sweet tea rant the other day didn't clue you in!).  Wednesdays are just to exhausting for me to want to cook in the evening.

Are you joining in the prepping challenge?  How has your week gone?
